I spent a very happy day in a stream in West Malling, Kent, photographing water voles.  Terry Whittaker has done amazing work at this site to try to ensure that the water vole population manages to survive.  The water voles are ridiculously cute and definitely seemed to enjoy the blackberries.  Their antics and general gymnastics as they reached just a little bit higher each time, was a joy to watch and photograph.  I was interested to see that they chose the ripest blackberries first, esepcially the mouldy over-ripe ones before making their way through them in order of ripeness.  Clever little critters.

One of the voles had quite a chunk of fur missing from her side but she seemed cheerful enough and happily munched her way through the blackberries.  They have such endearing expressions and it's very easy to slip into anthropomorphism especially when they appear to turn to you and say things like 'What do you mean, that's the last one?'

So, if it amuses you, you can go through the slide show below and dream up some captions or speech bubbles!

I went to Cornwall and learnt some more landscape photography skills from Guy Edwardes.  I also learnt that Cornwall has many steep cliffs and that camera bags appear to get heavier as a direct correlation to the amount of time that they are carried!

After the course, I was fortunate enough to spend a week at Cape Cornwall, just above Priest's Cove.  During the days there, Cathy and I practiced what we had learnt, relaxed and had fun out and about with our cameras or just sitting in the conservatory watching the sea.  I don't think that I have ever slept in a bedroom with a sea view before.  It was an amazing privilege.

From Cornwall, Cathy drove us to Lincolnshire where we spent a couple of days with Danny Green and a very large number of Grey and Common Seals on the beach at Donna Nook.  The trip was timed very carefully in order to avoid the breeding season and to make sure that we didn't disturb the seal colony at all.  We saw a couple of Common Seal pups but kept our distance and concentrated on the adults crashing in the waves or snoozing on the beach.  It was a great way to spend a birthday too!

Cathy, thank you so much for your company and support :-)
